Setting up your Zebra GX430t to print Monographic labels

Use the following procedures to set up the Zebra GX430T (EPL) printer to print Sierra monographic labels using print templates on Windows 7 or Windows 10. These procedures are to set up networked printer. Before proceeding, please make sure the HelpDesk has already added the Zebra printer to the USD network. You will need the printer's unique IP to complete the setup. You must be authorized to use print templates in Sierra. Please contact Library Services at libservices@sandiego.edu.


Installing Zebra Technologies Printer Drivers

  • Go to https://www.zebra.com/us/en/support-downloads/desktop/gx430t.html

  • Scroll to the middle of the page and click on the Drivers tab

  • Click on the download link for the "ZebraDesigner driver 32/64 bit. Certified for Windows" file for Windows 7 and Windows 10.

  • Click on the "Accept and Begin Download Now" button

  • Save the .exe file to your desktop

  • Open the .exe file

  • Click Next

  • Use the default extraction location "C:\"

  • Click Next, Next, Next

  • Uncheck "Run the printer installation wizard" and "View release notes"

  • Click Finish to install the drivers

Setting up the Zebra Printer on your Computer

NOTE: If a Zebra GX430T driver automatically downloads through your USB connection with your PC or laptop, you MUST still following the steps in this section. You will not be using the standard GX430T driver for printing monographs using print templates. It is only used for printing serials labels.

  • Click the Windows Start button

  • Choose Devices and Printers

  • Click Add a printer

  • Choose Add a local printer

  • Click Next

  • Choose Create a new Port

    • Standard TCP/IP Port

  • Click Next

  • For Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address

  • Click Next

  • For Device Type, select Standard → Generic Network Card

  • For Manufacturer, choose ZDesigner

  • For Printers, choose the latest version of Zdesigner GX430t (EPL)

  • Click Next

  • Change the printer name to Sierra ZDesigner GX430t (EPL) (or some other name that will be easily distinguishable from other printers you are connected to) 

  • Select Do not share this printer

  • Click Next

  • Uncheck Set as the default printer

  • Click on the Print test page

  • Click Close

  • Click Finish

Configuring your printer preferences

  • Click the Windows Start button

  • Open Devices and Printers

  • Right Click Sierra ZDesigner GX430T (EPL)

  • Click on Printing Preferences

  • Configure the Options tab according to below image

 

  • Open on the Advanced Setup tab (above)

  • Under Media settings, change the Media type to Label with gaps. 

  • Leave other settings as they are

  • Click Apply

  • Click OK

    • Sierra has to be rebooted if its open during the printer install or configuration

Sierra Setup


You must first be authorized to use print templates. Have your supervisor contact Library Services at libservices@sandiego.edu if you do not have access to the following features.

  • Log into Sierra

  • Go to File →  Select Printer → Print Templates

  • Change Output Type to Spine Label

  • Click OK

  • For Print Service, select Sierra ZDesigner GX430t (EPL) that you just set up. 

  • Click the checkbox next to Save this Printer Selection

  • Click Print

 

  • Go to Admin → Settings

  • Open the Print Templates tab

  • For Output Type, choose Spine Label

  • Click the checkbox next to Use Print Templates

 

  • Under the Other Templates window, highlight and move the desired template(s) to the Preferred Templates window.

  • If you will only ever need to print one type of spine label:

    • At the bottom of the window, change the Select Template option to whichever template you would like to use. This will allow the user to print continuously without ever being prompted for a template.

  • If you frequently need to switch between multiple templates with different spine label formats: 

    • Make sure all the templates that you would like to use are in the left hand (Preferred Templates) side. 

    • At the bottom of the window, select "Always prompt for template" - that means Sierra will ask you every time a Spine label is printed which template you would like to use. 

  • Click the Save Settings button

  • Retrieve an item record to do a test print

  • Go to Tools → Print Spine Label or use shortcut CTRL + L
